Marie Curie in Scotland
We provide care and support for more than 8,600 people across Scotland every year.
What we do in ScotlandMarie Curie is the largest independent provider of end of life care and the largest charitable provider of hospice care beds in Scotland.
As well as nursing and hospice care, you'll find Companion volunteers and Marie Curie charity shops across the country. We also do policy campaigning and we're the largest charitable funder of research work to improve end of life care.
Hospice care at home
Marie Curie Nurses provide expert hospice care for people in their own home or in the community in 31 out of 32 local authority areas in Scotland. Read our latest inspection reports.
Although we don't currently provide hospice care at home in Shetland, people there can use our free information and support services and feel the benefits of our research and campaigning activities.
Urgent hospice care at home
Our registered nurses and senior healthcare assistants provide fast, responsive hospice care across Scotland, including Lothian and surrounding areas.
The Urgent Hospice Care at Home service helps prevent unnecessary hospital admissions, allowing people living with a terminal illness to spend their final weeks at home. We provide expert care wherever it's needed, whether that's a flat, a shared home, a family house or a care home.
Hospices
Our hospices in Edinburgh and Glasgow provide short-term inpatient care, various outpatient day services and family support. Our community teams also visit people in their own home to provide care and support.
We also work in a unique partnership with NHS Lothian and Macmillan Cancer Support to provide the West Lothian Community Palliative Care Service, based at St John’s Hospital in Livingston.
Care home support
In our care home programme in Scotland, we're developing opportunities to work alongside and support our colleagues working in care homes to deliver high quality palliative and end of life care. If you would like to find out more or share your experiences, then please get in touch at knowledgezone@mariecurie.org.uk.

Companion volunteers
Our trained Companion volunteers offer support to people who might need emotional support with all aspects of their terminal illness, or some practical help.
Marie Curie charity shops
We have 34 shops across Scotland selling a wonderful range of clothes, accessories, homeware and more at great prices. There are several ways to support them – whether through shopping, volunteering or donating your pre-loved things. Find your nearest shop.
Policy and public affairs
We work closely with politicians to inform, influence and improve policies and strategies in Scotland. We campaign for changes to legislation and regulation, and work in partnership with others to improve palliative and end of life care.
To ensure we can deliver the best possible end of life experience for everyone affected by dying, death and bereavement no matter who they are, where they live or their diagnosis.
Latest: Support the right to palliative care in Scotland
Marie Curie Scotland is working with MSPs from different political parties towards changing the law so that every Scottish resident has a right to the palliative care they need.
We're inviting our supporters to take part in a consultation to help shape the proposal to change the law and create a right to palliative care. It's a chance to share your stories, your reflections, your insights and your expertise.
You can also add your name to the petition calling for a right to palliative care in Scotland. Together we can show the Scottish Government that this is an issue they can't ignore.
Research
Marie Curie is the UK’s leading charitable funder of palliative and end of life care research. We fund our own researchers, and work in partnership with other organisations, to ensure high-quality research in this area of care continues to be a priority.
